The Paradigm Shift in Psychotherapy
In the 1960's - 1970's, psychology and psychiatry mainly used the behavioral approach to therapy. Psycho-therapeutic changes happened in the behavior of clients. The client's maladaptive, aggressive, violent or anxious behavior was worked on to be changed without looking into the client's internal world.
During the history of the science of psychotherapy in the 1970's and 1980's, we focused on observing client's internal cognitive processes, such as thoughts, consciousness and explicit memories. Thus, we entered into the period of cognitive paradigm and cognitive psychology. Magdalena has been extensively trained in these cognitive therapies such as; Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
We are now in a period, where there is a paradigm shift happening from cognitive psychotherapy to bodily and emotionally based therapies. Our implicit, emotional knowledge is located in the right side of our brains and also in the entire nervous systems of our bodies. Explicit processes are the bases with the use of language and most therapists are still using talking therapy in counselling, and during this process we mostly use the left side of our brain. Contrary to using the implicit processes, which drive emotional learning and serve as the effective core for the sense of self. The clinical intuition of therapists who can understand their non-language based clients, through their posture, gestures, bodily sensations, tone of voice, intensity, timing and imagination have an expanded capacity. Integration here is the most important process. The mental health field has seen a significant shift in the last decade toward including a Neuroscience Perspective when clinicians are designing clinical interventions. Although many therapists find it difficult and it has been challenging to apply this scientific information into their therapeutic approach, Magdalena is trained and certified in Interpersonal Neurobiology. She believes these new approaches and information in the counselling field are indispensable in helping clients today.
